GTA 6 Is Changing How You Steal Cars

Rockstar-attributed reporting describes layered vehicle access instead of universal hotwiring

By GTA6HeadPublished August 29, 2026Last updated August 30, 2026

Vehicle theft in Grand Theft Auto VI is described as more layered than in previous entries. Reporting attributed to Rockstar states that players will not be able to simply hotwire every vehicle they come across, and that access to more sophisticated cars depends on tools the player acquires.

Coverage of the Extended Look footage and follow-up guide reporting describes options such as smashing a window or using a slim jim to get into a vehicle, rather than a single universal steal action.

GTA6Head classifies this as Reported. Rockstar has not published a Newswire specification of the vehicle access system, and no full progression tree, tool list, or minigame structure has been officially detailed. We do not know how many tools exist, how they are unlocked, or whether every vehicle class behaves differently.

What is Confirmed is narrower: the Extended Look was released on August 27, 2026 and Rockstar states it was captured entirely from in-game footage on PlayStation 5. Everything beyond what is visible there, or attributed directly to Rockstar staff in interviews, stays Reported until Rockstar posts it.
